HERE is the latest contributions for Burton-in-Kendal from community news correspondent Jay Barkley.
THE Onion Show returned in all is glory to the delight of all Burtonians who attended in huge numbers to admire the many and varied entries.
From the local 'Monty Dons' came the heaviest of perfect onions, leeks, gourds, cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots, and beetroots to crisp salad produce, apples and lovely flowers.
Alongside a cracking display of
cakes, fruit pies, scones, bread, and tray-bakes worthy of Mar the y
Berry, Delia and Nigella combined, proof of very serious talent in Burton
as Zoe Woolcock took First for her magnificent chocolate cake.
The Judges being hard-pressed to choose from the array of goodies set before them.
The exhibited flowers drew great admiration as Yvonne Healey took First in the 'Three Chrysanthemum Class', Ed Hindson’s First in ‘Vase of Flowers' class whilst picking up second and third in 'Vase of Dahlias' class.
The children's entries were as usual, clever, and imaginative the 'Fruit and Vegetable Animals' a real joy as the children from Church House Milnthorpe were awarded a well-deserved first of many congratulations.
THE climax of each fund-raising Onion Show is the' Auction of Promises'
conducted by the tireless Neil Shaw.
'Promises' to range from Sporting Days, sides of salmon, home reared Hereford beef, hampers of every imaginable produce from Greek to local signature dishes including locally produced gin, holidays at hotels and holiday cottages, real Christmas trees, sacks of logs, gardening time and many more.
This year a record £7000.00 was raised, one Promise alone raising £3000.00 for a 'Simulated Game Day and Hog Roast'- complete with tuition.
All funds raised are shared between Cancer charities and the ongoing supervised
calendar of events for Burton village children.
Congratulations to Neil Shaw, Carl Jackson, all committee members of Burton Sports and Recreation Trust, their family members, and the many stalwarts behind the scenes.
Not least to Rob Jones manager of the Kings Arms hotel where the annual show so enjoyably takes place.
A triumph of organization, community spirit and the legendary generosity for which Burton-in-Kendal is known.
A good place and time to be after the restrictions and dark days of lockdowns.
Well done everyone.
BURTON WI Cooperative entries in the Westmorland Show 'Celebrating Key Workers' took equal First and came Third in the group 'Time to Celebrate'.
