THE theme of this year’s Kendal Torchlight Festival has been revealed.

At a grand launch at the weekend, which saw dancing and music from local band The Seals, it was announced that, following on from last year’s Garden of Delights, the chosen theme this year will be Scrapheap Legends.

Chair Craig Russell said: “Last year we chose to celebrate our gardens and green spaces after spending so much time in lockdown enjoying them.

“This year we continue our environmental theme but with a focus on scrap and recycling. We hope that people will be really inspired to make entries from a wide range of material, whether this is metal, cardboard, wood or fabric.

“Think Scrap Heap Challenge meets Blue Peter and the Great British Sewing Bee.

“The word legends could be legendary people from history or today, it could be characters or animals, a costume, a sculpture or a landscape. We want to inspire people to get involved.”

Organisers have said there will be a host of events throughout the summer for people to get involved with, including making workshops, masterclasses, dance and music.

And the format of the event will be similar to the 2021’s festival, which centred on Abbott Hall Park.

On Friday night, foot-based processions will make their way from the outskirts of Kendal to meet at a grand opening ceremony in Abbot Hall Park.

Throughout the day and into the evening on Saturday there will be a programme of events including a procession, judging of entries and a fire garden.

The Saturday street party will take place in the town centre with music, performers, street theatre, stalls, workshops, and a daytime procession.

A full overview of how to get involved and enter will be available on the Torchlight website.
