HUNDREDS gathered from all over the UK to create a 'lava flow' of lights off Scafell Pike.

More than 400 participants took part in the all-day experience which saw an expert team of mountaineers, climbers and performance captains move hundreds of people – Lumenators - through the mountain landscape holding specially designed Geolights.

The finale gathering was the first of four finale events taking place on the UK’s four highest mountains as part of Green Space Dark Skies this September, led by Walk the Plank as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK. The Green Space Dark Skies Finale will be broadcast as part of a BBC Countryfile special in the autumn.

The ascent took around two hours, with the Lumenators reaching a satellite peak of Scafell Pike. The event was captured through film, photography, and drone imagery. The mountaineers guided the participants down the mountain in the dark when the light show was done.

Green Space Dark Skies aims to highlight the need to safeguard the future of the countryside and our rights to access it through the art project.

Lumenator Karen Forrester said after the gathering: “Fantastic day from start to finish - well worth getting a good soaking for and would do it all again in a heartbeat. Such a great atmosphere from everyone."

Fatmina Yusuf, another Lumenator who went up Scafell Pike said: "Great to meet beautiful people and make beautiful art. It was truly magical."

The Green Space Dark Skies journey continues across the UK until the end of September. Lumenators will be participating in Finale events on Ben Nevis on 10 September and Slieve Donard on 24 September; however, they will not be going to the summits.

Green Space Dark Skies is part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK and is produced by Walk the Plank.

UNBOXED brings free large-scale events, installations and digital experiences to areas in the UK. The events are created by scientists, technicians, engineers, artists and mathematicians. UNBOXED is funded and supported by the four governments of the UK.
