A SOUTH Cumbrian village that has opened its doors to receive dozens Ukrainian refugees has been featured on a primetime BBC programme.

Since April Arnside has been welcoming refugees into the area and the local community.

As a part of a Christmas special produced by the BBC programme The One Show, the village was featured on the show.

The four-minute long report showed the Christmas celebrations between Ukrainians and their host families.

Trustee of Arnside Homes for Ukraine Anna Gorst was shocked by the horrors happening thousands of miles away in Ukraine and posted an appeal on social media earlier this year for villagers to take in refugees.

Anna has helped match Ukrainians with local families and raised thousands towards bringing refugees to safety in the UK.

Anna said: "It was very fun to do the programme they were a lovely team. The final result was heartwarming.

"It was 12 hours of filming but the overall feeling of it was what we wanted."

"It was a Christmas special so it was deliberately focusing on the positive angle and the Christmas aspects of the community.

"Most people found it moving and a heartwarming watch."

Anna said the programme had already an impact and people have contacted them to help.

She said: "We have been contacted from the programme by one family in the Windermere area who is very keen to help us so that has been lovely.

"It would be really lovely if the outcome of the show is that people realise that it was something that they could do, but it's also really crucial to know that if you are going to host somebody ensure that they are not going to be isolated."
