THE Village Shop in Cartmel is now offering any podium-finishing horse team at the races a slice of famous sticky toffee pudding. 

The winning jockeys, owners and trainers of every race received a pudding, but this has been extended to all podium finishers. 

Simon Johns, managing director of Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding said: "It didn’t seem fair that second and third place didn’t get the same, so now we do that too!

“There’s a real affection between the racecourse and our company – we’ve sponsored two races a season for years. If you listen to the commentators, you’ll hear them saying ‘and the riders are passing pudding corner…’. It’s absolutely ingrained with them.”

Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding was originally the creation of Howard and Jean Johns who arrived in Cartmel in 1971 to run the King’s Arms pub in the square, later taking on the Village Shop.

It recently featured on the BBC Coast to Coast Food Festival series with Edith Bowman and Colin Murray.
