LOVEBIRDS have proven that age is just a number after getting married in a Lake District hotel.

Retired 60-year-old Louise Kay wed Roy Sharples, 65, after he proposed while at his caravan in Grange-over-Sands.

Ms Kay was previously a music teacher and pianist and Ms Sharples a Housing Officer.

"I was teaching Isaac, Roy's grandson to play the piano and Roy's daughter Sara invited us both for a Sunday roast dinner," said Ms Kay.

"We got on really well from the start. After a couple of roast dinners at Sara's, Roy asked me out on a date. We went to a local restaurant in Standish, we had a lovely evening and carried on seeing each other every day.

"At the start of Covid and then lockdown, Roy asked me to move in then we could still see each other – and I never moved back."

The couple got engaged on November 6 2022 when they were spending time at Roy's caravan in Grange.

Roy had planned to propose to Louise in Grasmere but due to the heavy rain he had to change his plans.

"On the way back to the caravan, the weather had improved so Roy pulled into a viewpoint of Windermere," said Ms Kay.

"We were admiring the gorgeous view and as I turned to Roy, he was down on one knee holding the engagement ring and asked me to marry him. Needless to say, I said yes. I had no idea that he was planning this. It was a total surprise – but the best one ever."

The lovebirds tied their knot on August 10 2023 at the Cragwood Country House Hotel in Windermere.

The ceremony was witnessed by 20 close family members and took place in the gazebo overlooking the lake followed by champagne and afternoon tea.

"It was the first sunny and hot Thursday in August. After a leisurely breakfast the morning was busily spent getting ready," said Ms Kay.

"As our guests gathered at the Gazebo, Serenata played and set the atmosphere beautifully.

"Everything went without a hitch. The ceremony was followed by a champagne reception and photographs. Our photographer was Lauryn Eliza, and she was fabulous."

The pair, from Standish, in Wigan, are having their honeymoon in October and are travelling to the Portuguese island of Madeira.
