A local filmmaker has succeeded in raising the investment needed to premiere a gothic horror.

Created by Elliott Leon, 'Freaks of Fancy' was largely filmed in the Lake District and is set for release on November 16 at the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness.

With Kendal and Bowness as its main backdrop, the film predominantly uses cast members from the northwest, particularly Cumbria.

Mr Leon said: "My hope is to make films in support of the area I live in.

"There are so many talented people who live around here, and they deserve to be given a platform to show the skills they have to offer."

Previously, a screening took place at the Staveley Roundhouse for the cast and their families but a full premiere was more difficult to procure.

He said: "First of all, I want to thank Fliss Pocock of the Roundhouse and the team at the Old Laundry Theatre for supporting us but we always need more from other people when it comes to promoting independent films."

Set in 1927 and 1928, the film will follow an Art Deco style, revolving around the tale of a group of four graduates expecting a fun getaway.

The film's star is Holly Lovelady, an up-and-coming performer from Liverpool who is set to work with 'Calendar Girls' producer Nick Barton.

Rachel Brownstein, a Northern Star award winner from Leeds, completes the cast alongside an ensemble of local actors.

"We focus on a character by the name of Doctor Reed, who invites his students to his house on the lake," Mr Leon explained.

"As the tale progresses, we get to watch as the guests start to realise that this isn't a holiday, but instead the doctor manipulating them into test subjects."

Tickets for the screening at the Old Laundry Theatre cost £6 and can be booked in advance here.
