AN Ulverston-based choir has been preparing for a 'demanding' performance of what is regarded by many as one of the supreme achievements of Western classical music.

Furness Bach Choir will be performing J S Bach's Mass in B minor.

The performance will take place in the atmospheric setting of Ulverston Parish Church which has ancient roots dating back 900 years.

Vice Chair of Furness Bach Choir, Alison Bolt, said: "This is undoubtedly one of the most-loved choral works ever written and is a truly glorious piece of music.

"It is also one of the most demanding - hugely complex for both choir and orchestra and, if performed well, a tremendous tour de force.

"For this reason, it is not performed all that often, but Furness Bach Choir, under their dynamic young conductor, Alexander Robinson, have spent over three months rehearsing for Saturday's performance.

"Alex is bringing a period orchestra, Ensemble Laus Deo, for the occasion, and the soloists are all outstanding young professional singers, so it should be a memorable evening. The choir is hoping for a capacity audience for this concert."

The event will take place on Saturday December 2 at 7.30pm.
