The Morecambe Bay Partnership, a local charity, is launching a special appeal this month to raise £4,000.

The aim is to enable young people around Morecambe Bay, unable to visit due to issues including poverty, social inequality, lack of transportation, and physical or mental health limitations, to access the coast.

The appeal is especially directed towards individuals and businesses willing to donate £25, or any amount they can part with, to help those youths suffering from life’s adversities, experience the outdoors.

The funds raised will go towards outdoor educational activities around Morecambe Bay and give opportunities to learn new skills, gain confidence, support coastal protection, and improve health and wellbeing.

Being outside has proven to boost health by relieving mental stress and supporting physical health.

Sarah Mason, Morecambe Bay Partnership’s CEO, said: "Morecambe Bay is a breathtaking place. We all share it. But the truth is not everyone can truly experience it and benefit from it.

"We don't think that's fair. The Bay's coast and countryside is just not accessible to many young people who are struggling with many challenges at home."

Michelle Cooper, engagement lead at the charity, shared an experience of a hesitant young boy who took part in a trip.

At first, he was terrified of wide-open spaces, but by the end of the day, he had gained so much confidence that he didn’t want to leave.

She emphasised that for many children, the only chance they have to explore nature is through school activities.

Successful grant applications have already covered most of the targeted cost to run the programme for a year.

If the charity’s £4,000 appeal is successful, it will enable them to reach their goal and run the programme for a full year.
