People living across South Lakeland have been found to be just as happy as they were a decade ago.

This comes following a mental health study which was conducted by Paranimo using raw ONS data.

This was done to see which local authority in the UK had the biggest percentage drop across three categories of overall personal well-being from April 2013 to March 2023.

In the Annual Population Survey, the ONS reports on how satisfied the UK populace is with their life, to what extent they feel that the things they do in their life are worthwhile and how happy they feel.

The ONS then gives each local authority a weighted average score for satisfaction, worthwhileness and happiness.

The weighted score for the South Lakeland district was 7.63, one of six out of 381 areas not to see an overall change.

In comparison, people in Barrow contributed to a current score of 7.24, having previously been 6.72 in 2013.

The high point for South Lakeland was actually in 2021 when a score of 7.88 was recorded.

The lowest result included in the study was ten years before that in 2011, which saw a score of 7.24 - the same as Barrow in the present day.

In terms of improving the overall wellbeing of residents, South Lakeland was placed in 169th position with a percentage change of 0.09%.

Thanks to its previously lower scores, Barrow was seen as the 74th best region in terms of improvements with a percentage increase of 1.89%.

The perception of life being worthwhile in South Lakeland has actually minimally decreased over the past decade.

However a decrease from 8 to 7.99 suggests the same narrative that living conditions in the district have remained largely the same over 10 years.

This then explains why life satisfaction has improved over the same time span, being raised by 0.38%.
