New suicide bereavement peer support groups in Penrith, Carlisle, Kendal, and Barrow have been launched.

Every Life Matters, a suicide prevention charity, aims to give those who have lost someone to suicide a safe and confidential space to share their experiences and feelings while receiving support.

The Penrith group is already underway, with more expected to start in the coming weeks.

The groups are open to anyone bereaved by suicide regardless of how long ago they have lost someone.

The structure of each session is divided into two parts - one dedicated to introductions and sharing of experiences and support, and the second, a more informal environment for chats over tea and cake.

There is, however, no obligation to share or talk as attendees could simply meet and be in the company of people who may understand them better.

Lucy Elleray, peer support group coordinator at Every Life Matters, said: "It can be a very lonely journey, with some really complicated emotions that can be hard for others to understand.

"So to be in the company of others who have walked a similar path, people who are facing similar issues to yourself, and people who just understand your grief - because they also live with it - is amazing.

"These groups are here to offer support and to community to anyone who has lost someone to suicide that can be a child, a partner a friend or a colleague.

"There's no judgement, just a warm and welcoming space to have a hot drink and some kind company.

"Being with other people who just "get it" is such a relief, even if you don't want to talk very much, just a safe, welcoming space is comforting.”

All group sessions are facilitated by volunteers who have themselves been bereaved by suicide.

These facilitators help initiate conversations and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be heard.

Their primary role is to listen and provide comfort to others sharing their experiences.
