The imminent arrival of a new flood defence scheme in Appleby has resulted in month-long roadworks in town.

The work started on Monday, April 8 and is expected to last between three and four weeks.

During this period, no through traffic will be allowed on Chapel Street between Low and High Wiend.

Appleby Town Council said: "This road closure is necessary for essential work to be carried out by United Utilities and Northern Gas, in preparation for the flood defence scheme."

The disruption will mean that there will be two-way traffic on Low Wiend, and vehicle access to and from the car park, medical practice and swimming pool will be via Low Wiend.

Access to and from Pigney's petrol station will be via High Wiend.
