A PUB landlord has reacted after a man who bit him was jailed over a 'disgusting' incident.

David Lewis assaulted landlord Ben Jones and abused customers at the Piel Castle in Ulverston in what the pub boss described as a 'highly unpleasant incident'.

South Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard the 23-year-old defendant hurled abuse at customers and staff at the pub and was ordered to leave - before biting into Mr Jones's arm.

Lewis was jailed for 12 weeks after he admitted to causing actual bodily harm and to using threatening or abusive words in the pub during the incident on September 29.

Speaking after the sentencing, Mr Jones said: "David Lewis, a man already on a Barwatch ban for violent behaviour in other licensed premises, entered the Piel Castle.

"Within seconds, he'd started a fight with another man who did not know him.

"This was quickly broken up, and Lewis was escorted out of the pub by myself.

"He would not go away and stood outside the pub screaming threats and abuse at myself and various customers.

"I stood in the doorway to prevent him re-entering, and made an emergency call to the police.

"While I was doing this, Lewis bent forward and bit my arm through the fabric of my shirt.

"Eventually he went away. He was arrested by police a short time later at his home.

"This was a disgusting incident which was very upsetting for those involved, and who witnessed it."

The landlord said Ulverston's Barwatch committee would work to keep violent people away from the town's pub.

"A key point about the incident is that Lewis knew he was on a Barwatch ban, and should never  have entered the premises," he said.

"This, along with his previous criminal record, has been reflected in his custodial sentence.

"It's also important to stress that, in Ulverston, these types of incidents are rare. The vast majority of people who enjoy the hospitality of Ulverston's pubs are lovely, respectful, and just want to enjoy a fun night out.

"Ulverston's LVA/Barwatch committee will work hard to ensure the tiny minority of violent or abusive people are kept out of the town's pubs. David Lewis will likely be on Barwatch indefinitely."
