POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an alleged robbery in a Kendal street.

According to police, the alleged incident occurred just after midnight when a man approached the woman as she made her way through the town centre at around midnight on September 11.

The victim, who is from Kendal and is in her 30s, was walking from Finkle Street towards New Road when she noticed that she was being followed by an unknown male.

She took a route up Kent Street and on to Stramongate where she noticed the same man still following her towards Blackhall Road.

Police said the man attempted to make some conversation with her woman, apparently with a French or similar sounding accent, although police believe this may not be genuine.

When they reached Sandes Avenue a struggle took place where the man tried to grab the woman's handbag.

She resisted and sustained minor injuries to her arm, however, the man managed to steal her bag and made off towards Victoria Bridge where he turned right along the riverside footpath. No property has been recovered.

The suspect is described as white, between 5'8" and 6' tall, of slim build, aged in his 20s or 30s with short, dark brown hair. He was wearing light trainers, blue jeans and a tracksuit type top with dark lower half and pale top half, separated by a number of horizontal stripes.

If anyone has any other information they are asked to call Kendal CID on 0845-3300-247 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
