CHOCOLATE helped children to learn about the bible, when a storytelling day themed around the melt-in-your-mouth treat took place.

Some 170 pupils took time out from the classroom to visit Kendal Parish Church, where the Board of Education of the Carlisle Diocese had organised a Chocolate Harvest.

The event, which welcomed children from three Church of England primary schools - Vicarage Park in Kendal, St Mark’s at Natland and Staveley Primary School - centred around the story of feeding the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish but used Fairtrade chocolate in place of the traditional food.

One of the organisers, the Rev Jane Nattrass, said: “We had a fabulous day and the children were a delight to spend time with. One of the key themes we wanted to get across was the idea of sharing. The children baked 60 beautiful bread rolls and at the end of the service shared them very generously.”
