A KENDAL woman was presented with some recycled goodies after pledging to recycle “just one more thing” at a Resource Cumbria roadshow.

Ros Taylor was one of up to 80 local residents who promised to do their bit to help the environment and she pledged to recycle her used household batteries in future.

Figures unveiled by Resource Cumbria and WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) to mark the start of Recycle Week highlighted a series of ‘hotspots’ in the home of ‘forgotten’ items of recyclable household waste.

The top five items that people say they do not recycle are: l Aerosol containers for deodorant, air freshener or polish.

l Biscuit and sweet tins.

l Plastic shampoo and toiletry bottles.

l Plastic cleaning product bottles, such as bleach or disinfectants.

l Glass jars, such as those for cooking sauces.

As part of the roadshows, members of the public were asked to pledge to recycle an extra item and as a reward were entered into a draw to win a goody bag of items made completely out of recycled materials.

Cumbria County Council’s community waste education officer for South Lakeland, Katharine Smith, said: “The Recycle Week roadshow in Kendal was a great event. We were able to talk to lots of local people like Ros about what they currently recycle and what they can do to recycle even more.

“There are lots of everyday household items that can be overlooked. Events like Recycle Week encourage people to consider these items and get into the habit of recycling them too.”
