POLICE conducted Operation Orwell in Kendal last week to tackle what they described as a “disproportionate number of young drivers” who are involved in fatal or serious accidents in Cumbria each year.

During the operation, vehicles containing young drivers were taken to a check site at New Road, Kendal, where documentation checks were made. Cars found to be speeding or which had excessively loud exhaust pipes or tinted windows were targeted by the operation.

The vehicle occupants were given the opportunity to watch some DVDs, shown by Cumbria Fire Service, which displayed the potentially terrible consequences of poor driver behaviour.
