CUMBRIA Police are urging the public to be vigilant following a number "distraction burglaries" by bogus callers recently.

Over September and October police received several reports of fake officials entering premises under false pretences and distracting homeowners whilst stealing various property.

On three occasions, criminals posing as water board officials have committed distraction burglaries.

Detective Sergeant Helen Harkins said: "We have seen an increase in distraction burglaries across the county throughout September and October and we are asking members of the public to be as vigilant as possible in order to protect their property.

"In many instances, offenders have preyed on elderly victims so we would ask communities to look out for their neighbours and report any suspicious activity to police immediately.

"These crimes are being treated as a priority by Cumbria Constabulary but we need the help of the public to trace these offenders and bring them to justice."
