STUDENTS rocked their way to a host of awards for their musical talents about drink and drugs.

Pupils from The Lakes School took part in the Northern Heat of the prestigious international Rock Challenge competition at the Sands Centre in Carlisle and took home a number of accolades - including the first prize.

Rock Challenge UK is part of the Global Rock Challenge which features schools from all over the world, and is supported by the Be Your Best Foundation.

The aim of the Foundation is to encourage young people to lead healthy lifestyles and to ‘be their best’ without the need for tobacco, alcohol or other drugs and the Rock Challenge event is their main activity for promoting this cause.

Students had to create a product with the motto to be the best that they can without the use of nicotine, alcohol or other drugs.

Eighty-eight students from the Troutbeck Bridge comprehensive put on “Will this be the Start of Something?” and won awards for best choreography and the Rock Challenge Drug Awareness award, as well as scooping the Performers’ Choice award, chosen by the other schools taking part as the outstanding performance of the day.

Assistant Headteacher at The Lakes Helen Robinson said: “it was an outstanding day – all the students performed outstandingly well and should be very proud of the piece that they created.

“They faced some stiff competition from the other schools competing, but they all performed to their true potential and I thought that they deserved to win.

“They were a great credit to the school, both in the way that they performed and in the way that they all conducted themselves throughout the day. The whole of our school community is very proud of them.”
