A SOUTH Lakeland brass band contest was hailed a great success today, despite only six bands taking part.
The annual event in Kirkby Lonsdale attracted an appreciative crowd and the competitors responded with some fine music.
Overall winner of the contest was Pilling Brass Band, which won the Simmy Hartley Trophy for most points.
Pilling came first in the 4th Section, winning the the Bill and Mary Kendal Memorial Trophy. The band also lifted the Jim Rose Trophy for Best March, the Geoffrey Tempest Trophy for the Best Hymn and the David French Trophy for Best Instrumentalist (solo cornet).
Tarleton and District Brass Band came second in the 4th Section, winning the Tom Peak Trophy while Kirkby Lonsdale lifted the Lunesdale Trophy for third place.
Meanwhile, Ripon City Brass Band took all three of the honours awarded in the 3rd Section - the Jack Sedgwick Trophy for first place, the Gordon Holmes Trophy for Best March and the Helen Taylor Trophy for Best Hymn. Ripon also won the P D Ogden Trophy for deportment.
