A TEENAGER who led police on a car chase through South Lakeland was sentenced to prison.

Daniel Mason, 19, of Cartmel Place, Morecambe, also stole from his aunt to buy drugs, Kendal Magistrates heard this week.

Prosecuting, Lisa O’Laughlin said Mason stole a car from Carnforth with two accomplices.

Police identified the stolen vehicle at Rusland Pool on the A590, and used a stinger device at Levens after it failed to pull over.

They found Mason drunk at the wheel.

While on bail, Mason’s aunt found a receipt from the Money Shop in Barrow, revealing Mason had pawned three of her gold rings for £16 to buy cannabis, said Ms O’Laughlin. Mitigating, Rachel Broughton said Mason was a “habitual user of cannabis” who suffered from attention deficit hormonal disorder.

Chair Michael Bentley said the theft from his aunt was a particularly “mean offence.”

Mason pleaded guilty to stealing a car, driving while disqualified, driving while drunk, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing the rings, making false representations and failing to attend court on an earlier occasion.

He was sentenced to 84 days in prison and disqualified from driving for 15 months.
