AN MP is appealing to landowners to help hundreds of aspiring gardeners in need of a vegetable patch.

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP, Tim Farron, has joined Kendal Town Council in its quest to create more allotments in the town, after it was revealed around 200 people are on the waiting list.

Mr Farron is asking local landowners and farmers to consider renting land to KTC, which could be let out to residents as allotments.

“Over the last 30 years the amount of land given over to allotments in the UK has dropped by almost 50 per cent because of the availability of cheap food at the supermarkets,” he said.

“I’d certainly encourage any local landowner or farmer to get in contact with KTC and provide local residents with the opportunity to grow their own food and dig their way out of the recession.”
