A SOUTH Lakeland man died partly as a result of his mining past a coroner has recorded.
Arnold Parkinson, 81, died of bronchial pneumonia while living at the Heversham House care home, an inquest has heard.
Mr Parkinson, who, during his youth, worked in a coal mine at Wigan for eight years drilling holes to set explosive charges, was found to have carbon deposits in his lungs by pathologist Adam Padel. Mr Padel said that Mr Parkinson, who had also smoked for periods in his life, had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - a disease of the lungs.
The inquest heard that in his later years Mr Parkinson had also suffered from several strokes, which caused his health to falter.
Ian Smith, coroner for South and East Cumbria, recorded that Mr Parkinson died from a combination of natural causes and industrial disease.
