A SETTLE falconry centre is appealing for help in tracking down too missing vultures named Dumb and Dumber.

Dumb, the male bird, was carried off by high winds at the Yorkshire Dales Falconry and Conservation Centre on Saturday while performing a public display.

His disappearance follows that of female bird, Dumber, who went missing in Easter.

The birds have a 7-foot wingspan, and look like “great big turkeys” according to falconry centre director, Carol Petrie.

At 12noon on Saturday, Dumb was performing a falconry display when he got caught in a crosswind.

The bird was spotted over Pen-y-ghent, and then yesterday near Paythorne on the Lancashire border.

“It’s a sad and worrying loss for us. The birds are all part of our family here. They are all individuals with names,” said Ms Petrie.

Dumber went missing in April after being blown off course by strong easterly winds while performing before members of the public.

The mystery over her whereabouts has grown since her disappearance.

She was originally seen being blown towards Austwick, landing on top of the Traddock Hotel before spending the night perched on top of Austwick Church roof.

However, after being sighted over Kirby Lonsdale and Lowther, the centre acted on a tip off that the bird had been taken into a sanctuary north of the border.

“It was all very vague. We made enquiries in Scotland straight away, but nobody has heard anything about it,” said Ms Petrie, who appealed for anybody who spots the birds to get in touch with the centre on 01729 822 832.

Vultures are not predatory. They eat carrion in the wild and would likely feed off roadkill.
