A QUEST to revitalise a historic Furness landmark has received a £150,000 cash boost from English Heritage.

Members of Ulverston Town Council (UTC) welcomed the additional funds for the £2.1 million Sir John Barrow Monument restoration project.

“I am absolutely delighted we have received this grant,” said Coun Norman Bishop-Rowe, mayor of Ulverston. “The monument is really important for Ulverston. After all, how many towns have their own lighthouse?”

UTC’s endeavour to restore the towering nineteenth century structure on Hoad Hill has been embraced by local people, with a large amount of the money raised within the community.

The monument has been closed to the public since 2003 but UTC hopes the latest funding, which will allow repairs to be carried out to the plinth, will see it fully restored and reopen during the first half of 2010.

Andrew Davison, English Heritage ancient monuments inspector, said: “English Heritage is delighted to be able to contribute to the restoration of this iconic landmark, in the hope it will soon be available once again for everyone to enjoy.”
