AN EMPTY Furness pub is set to be bulldozed and replaced with new housing due in part to the failing hostelry industry.
Barrow Borough Council’s planning committee gave the green light to Bryn and David Clark’s application to build five two storey houses in place of the Anchor Hotel in Ulverston Road, Lindal-in-Furness.
With The Railway Inn, cricket club and bowling club already serving the community, the committee agreed that there was little need for another pub in the current climate, with an estimated 36 pubs closing a week in the UK according to the British Beer and Pub Association.
The application was granted despite objections from several residents concerned about traffic, sunlight and privacy.
