A SATELLITE navigation system has been blamed for an articulated lorry becoming trapped on a steep and narrow South Lakeland lane.

The long vehicle, driven by a Romanian man, was following a sat nav on a journey from Carlisle to Barrow when he got stuck on Red Bank, Grasmere, at around 8am this morning.

The truck blocked the road all morning until it was eventually dislodged and slowly reversed back down the lane at 1.20pm.

Vivienne Rees, South Lakeland District councillor for Ambleside and Grasmere, said members of Lakes Parish Council are looking at putting warning signs at the bottom of Red Bank warning drivers not to use sat navs.

“It is sat navs that are to blame,” she said.

“The parish council and the county council have met at the foot of Red Bank in response to residents’ concerns, and we all agreed that we need to put some signs up.

"It is incredibly dangerous if you have large vehicles like that going up there.

“We are considering putting signs up saying do not use sat navs.

"There is no way that an articulated lorry can negotiate the narrow bends.

"These people use their sat navs and don’t look at the terrain or at a map and just go up lanes like this.”
