A WOMAN suffered serious injuries when she crashed on the M6 motorway near Tebay this morning (Monday) in thick fog and extreme cold.

Police said three separate incidents occurred on the southbound carriageway between J38 at Tebay and J37 at Kendal in the space of an hour.

The first crash took place at the Tebay interchange at around 9.30am causing tailbacks for several miles.

An air ambulance attended the scene and fire crews freed a person who had become trapped in their car.

A further two people were injured during a second RTC minutes later.

Following this, a male driver skidded on the approach to the accident and collided with the barrier causing damage to his car.

He was uninjured.

The southbound carriageway was closed for over an hour but reopened at around 10.55am.
