YOUNGSTERS who are seen as the future of agriculture will represent their county in a national final after engaging in friendly battle at a festival of public speaking, drama and sports.

Members of Crook’s Young Farmers’ Club were celebrating after scooping top prize in the senior debating competition, with team mates Claire and Rebecca Redmayne, Vicci Neil, Richard Carruthers and Martin Robinson beating strong competition.

In total 500 young farmers from Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Northumberland and Durham converged on Carlisle’s to try to win a place in the national Finals of the various competitions.

Cumbria YFC spokesman Jan Davinson said: “We had some outstanding results.”

As part of the event, which is aimed at encouraging young farmers to build confidence and make friends, 450 members danced in the evening to the music of The Naturalz in an event held at Borderway Auction Mart.

Crook YFC now goes forward to the national finals at Stoneleigh on October 10 and 11.
