TOP chefs in the north west rustled up an array of culinary treats for visitors to the Best of Lakeland Hospitality Show this week at the Hyrdro hotel, Bowness.

Michelin-starred chef Nigel Mendham of The Samling at Ambleside and Adam Townsley of Malmaison in Liverpool were joined by trainee chefs from Kendal College and put on a show to wow the crowds.

Taking inspiration from the popular ‘Come Dine With Me’ TV show, visitors were selected from the audience to sample the chefs’ signature dishes.

The theatrical atmosphere extended into the rest of the hotel as 130 exhibitors displayed the best the Lakes has to offer in food, drink, hotel fixtures and fittings and tourist attractions.

Now in its 35th year the show is invite only and aims to connect people in the hospitality business in the Lake District and help small businesses meet suppliers.

Show organiser Gail Bartolf said: “We’ve had so many innovative products on display this year and it’s brilliant that we have managed to put together such a great event considering the economic climate.

“The feedback has been really positive and lots of deals were made. I think businesses are finally thinking enough is enough and are ready to upgrade equipment and invest in their businesses again.”

Well-known local food producers were out in force with Hawkshead Relish, Farrers of Kendal, the Windermere Ice Cream Company and Appleby Bakery all offering tasters of their products for people to try.

Traditional Cumberland butchers Richard Woodhalls, of Waberthwaite, also took the opportunity to showcase two of their new products - a stuffed smoked pork fillet and air dried Black Combe ham.

The day was also about showing hoteliers cutting edge products to help make their lives easier and impress guests.

Gary Carr, owner of Smart Cleaning Services of Kendal, demonstrated his 65ft extendable window cleaning pole which promises to reach the top floor of any hotel in the Lakes.

Mrs Bartolf added: “Continental Chef Supplies also offered a really niche product with personalised grease proof paper which looks fantastic.”

Steven Duffin of the Windermere Ice Cream Company said: “The event helps to keep my name up about the place and hopefully will lead to some new customers. It’s really helpful coming to things like this and a good introduction to the new season.”

Next year organisers hope to introduce a small restaurant for visitors at the show to dine in, to be run in conjunction with Kendal College chef display team.
