SUICIDE is a major public health issue, according to health chiefs at Morecambe Bay Primary Care Trust. Around 5,000 people take their own lives in England every year.
In the last 20 years or so, suicide rates have fallen in older men and women, but risen in young men.
A multi-agency half-day workshop is being held today in Heversham to discuss the draft Morecambe Bay suicide prevention strategy. The strategy aims to implement the recommendations from the National Suicide Prevention Strategy, and National Service Framework for Mental Health and reduce the death rate from suicide and undetermined injury by at least a fifth by the year 2010.
