AN INQUEST has found a verdict of misadventure into the death of a sky diver who was killed during a jump from a South Lakeland airfield, after opening his parachute too late.

South Lakeland Coroner's Court heard how keen parachutist, Peter Holt Shaw,74, died of multiple injuries on a jump from the North West Parachute Centre at Cark, near Flookburgh.

The sales executive from Eccles, Greater Manchester had notched up over 1,000 jumps in his career, including about 90 from the Cark airfield before his death on May 21, the inquest was told.

But the inquest also heard how four years earlier, Mr Shaw had been banned from the Black Knights Parachute Centre, near Lancaster, after opening his canopy at 750 feet.

The lowest altitude reccommended by experts is 2,500 feet.
