A DILAPIDATED landmark could soon be pulled down to make way for a 650-home retirement village.

The former Pontins holiday camp at Middleton has been redundant for years.

And it could now be bulldozed as ambitious plans to create retirement homes, leisure and retail blocks look set to win the go-ahead.

A £100 million blueprint has been lodged with Lancaster City Council and the future of the site is to be discussed next Monday (October 17).

Consent for the new village scheme was granted by the Secretary of State in September, 2002, following a public inquiry.

If the scheme by CJ Homes gets the nod, the former holiday camp will be bulldozed to make way for 37 bungalows, 82 mews houses, 359 apartments, 75 corner dwellings and 60 care home units.

The new look will also include a library, recreation and visitor accommodation plus facilities such as a bowling green.

Middleton Parish Council has voiced concerns about the amount of traffic which would be generated on the narrow country lane to the remote site close to Middleton Sands Lancashire County Council's emergency planning com-mittee is also worried that it lies within the emergency planning zones around Heysham Power Stations.

It says it is concerned about the ability of the road to handle vehicular movements in an emergency evacuation.

City council officers, however, are recommending that the scheme should win consent.
