A MONTH-LONG firearms amnesty that came to an end Thursday has seen members of the public hand in 400 weapons at police stations around Cumbria.

This figure exceeds the 378 weapons surrendered to police under the last national amnesty in June '96 following the Dunblane shootings.

Inspector Andy Sargent, who has been co-ordinating the campaign in Cumbria, said the final figure had benefited from a surge of people who had come forward in recent days. He said it was disappointing that only nine replica weapons had been relinquished.

"We know there are a lot of replica weapons out there and we would urge people to hand them in," he said.
