PHONEBOXES in Windermere and Bowness have been granted a reprieve.

British Telecom has answered appeals from Windermere Parish Council and agreed to save some of the payphones earmarked for removal following a drop in usage in the wake of the rise of mobile phones.

Of two call boxes next to the Windermere Tourist Information Centre one will stay in service while one of three at Rayrigg Road car park is to be retained.

In addition, a phone on the junction of Whinfell Road and Park Road will be kept "as a service for the local community".
