CAMPAIGNERS pushing for the A590 High and Low Newton bypass scheme to be given the go ahead are to press a Government Minister who has agreed to take a look at the notorious stretch of road in July.
Transport secretary John Spellar is to inspect the road when he visits the region on July 7. Campaigners see the visit as another positive sign that the £11 million scheme will be given the go ahead at the next hurdle.
The High and Low Newton bypass scheme took a step closer to being given the green light last month when it received the backing of Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott by being included in the North West Planning Guidance, which foresees the road built by 2007.
At the latest meeting of the A590 Now campaign group members agreed they would work with Furness MP John Hutton and Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Collins to mount an intensive lobby. They also decided to seek support from the Northwest Regional Assembly, the Northwest Development Agency and Cumbria County Council for the scheme.
