WIDESPREAD appeal is part of South Lakeland District Council's new vision for Kendal museum.
The authority has taken over the running of the 200-year-old centre following a period of management by the Lakeland Arts Trust.
SLDC's culture and tourism service manager Mike Vernon said: "We are keen to make the museum attractive to a wider audience and have plans to improve the permanent displays, make them accessible for more people and extend our education programme."
He added the authority would be researching what local people wanted from the museum and improving marketing to boost visitor numbers.
The museum, which was founded in 1768 as a Cabinet of Curiosities', houses permanent archaeological, historical, geological and natural history collections as well as temporary exhibitions, events and lectures.
Recreation portfolio holder Coun Andy Shine described the museum as a "vital asset for the town" which should have "strong links with the local community."
The museum is taking part in the Resident's Open Week scheme, which ends today (April 11), which allows free entry for a child accompanied by a full paying adult.
