HOUSE-PROUD people in the Furness area who have just finished their annual spring cleaning can get rid of their unwanted items this weekend.

On Sunday, the Broughton Community 2002 group is staging its final monthly market in the Victory Hall in the town.

It will be the 12th market the group has staged over the last year in a bid to help the village recover from the devastating effects caused by the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

The fair on Sunday, from 10.45am until 4pm, is to be themed around spring cleaning, so people can sell all their unwanted items.

Chairwoman of the community group, Mary Jardine, said: "What is someone's unwanted items are another person's treasures, so we think it will be a success.

" It will be the last fair as we only set out to run them for a year.

They have been a huge success as they have put Broughton on the map and increased trade in the town."

It is looking doubtful that the popular annual Millom and Broughton Agricultural Show, held on the last Saturday in August, will go ahead this year because of the regulations imposed on the movement of livestock following last year's foot-and-mouth outbreak.

Contingency plans are already being put together by members of the Broughton Community 2002 group in case it does not go ahead.

"We are planning on getting a marquee in the centre of the village and running lots of competitions and selling cakes and jams and things on the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday if the agricultural show doesn't go ahead," said Mrs Jardine.
