BARROW Central Wheelers' Barry Fittes finished a worthy third in the Sunday's National Veterans 50 miles time trial championship on the A66 Bassenthwaite course, north of Keswick.

Now in his 60s, Barry rode a 2-01-03 which gave him an age-related plus time of 46mins 29secs compared with Jim Bailey, of Otley CC, who had the winning plus time of 48mins 26secs, based on his actual time of 2-04-07.

Another Barrow veteran who produced an outstanding ride was Mike Speight, of Ulverston, who rode a personal best 1-59-31.

Other local times were: Andrew Barlow (KV) 1-57-29; Richard Belk (KV) 2-08-34; Tony Dixon (KV) 2-10-57; Fred Pickston (KV) 2-22-00; and Julia Mattison (LCC) 2-28-01.

In an open event for non-veterans, preceding the championship, Kent Valley's Tim Bennett did a personal best 2-06-29.

Fastest time of the day was Dave Ebbrell's

1-48-29.

Although the Lakes and Lancashire Sporting Courses Competition (SPOCO) was cancelled because of the foot-and-mouth outbreak, the final event in that series - the 22 miles Circuit of Greystoke - survived.

Saturday's event was won by Middridge's Dave Cooke in 53-25 and Kent Valley's Matt Woods did 59-19 with clubmate Judith Irvine on 1-06-42 in hot and windy conditions.

Quadrathlete Colin Hill won Kent Valley's first Levens club 10 of the season in an impressive 21-31 from Bruce Corrie's 22-15 and Simon Macereth's 22-35.

Other leading local times were: Adrian Yate 22-55; Matt Woods 23-00; Henry Syska (BCW) 23-17; Paul Trott 23-21; David Farrer 23-23; Tony Dixon 23-34; and Del Bolton 23-36.

Anne Plant (BCW) was the fastest woman on 23-45 with Judith Irvine on 25-12 and Heather Addison on 25-43.
