TWINS Claire and Katie Huck both represented Cumbria at this year's English Schools Championships at Exeter.

The two girls who attend Kirkbie Kendal School and compete for Kendal AAC did the same event - the junior girls high jump.

Out of a field of 25 athletes, Katie jumped a personal-best of 1m52 to finish 14th.

Her sister Claire progressed further to eventually clear 1m61, which was good enough for third place and a highly-prized bronze medal.

"Given that was the first time that both girls had competed in this major event, it was a fantastic performance, said Kendal AAC coach Nick Smith.

"It was an unforgettable experience," said Claire.

Katie added: " We were made to feel very special and the team spirit in the Cumbria camp squad was incredible."

Claire has a further English Schools championship to compete at later this year when she will join club-mates Melanie Whalley and Jessica Smith at the Combined Events Championships.

Laura Smith, from Windermere, finished a fine fifth at Exeter, competing as a first-year senior against many older rivals in the javelin.

The Border AC athlete, who won the Northern Counties champion, threw 38m52.

Cumbria were fifth overall of 15 in the smallest counties category.
