Sir, The current petrol distribution crisis should really be regarded as an opportunity.
The remaining stocks should be diverted (at substantially reduced cost) to the essential services - ambulance, fire, police and public transport; some at normal cost to consumer and industrial distribution traffic, and any left over at suitably increased cost to the private motorist.
People will rediscover the pleasure of travelling by public transport; pleasant, relaxed conversation on the train; the fun of getting there on the bus; the sheer joy of cycling to and from work without impatient motorists driving too fast and too close.
Altogether a very much more civilised way of life.
The devotees of the internal combustion engine have had their reign of terror for the last hundred years.
Let's do without them for a while.
