A CAMPAIGN for strategic development alongside the M6 designed to give a massive boost to the region's economy could soon be on the starting blocks.

Areas such as South Lakeland and Eden could reap the benefits of a series of developments if the scheme gains approval.

Eden District Council Director of technical services, Steve Huddart said: "We are going to explore putting a campaign together to maximise the benefits of the M6 to attract economic development."

The idea had been born out of initial discussions between Eden and Carlisle City Council.

With one of Eden's great strengths being its position in relation to the A66 and M6, opportunities for development had been realised.

But a strategic approach would be more effective for the future, particularly in terms of supply chain networks, employment opportunities and employment diversification, explained Mr Huddart.

By its very nature the project would be long-term.

"If this was to go forward, one of the first steps would be to look at where the potential for development is along the M6 corridor.

Sites would have to be carefully and sensitively selected.

"We are not envisaging an industrial site that starts at Burton and continues alongside the M6 all the way up to the borders."

Precise particulars were difficult to define at this stage, but the project would be likely to involve schemes similar to existing developments, such as the Eden District Council-owned industrial estate next to the M6 at Penrith and smaller scale developments at the Tebay interchange, said Mr Huddart.

Members were recommended to support the proposal to work in partnership with other authorities on a campaign for economic development.
