WALKERS along the Cumbria Way are set to stumble upon a sweet treat.

For an array of homemade cakes, freshly baked scones and real dairy ice creams await hungry ramblers at the newly opened Windy Ash Walkers Tea Room, on the outskirts of Ulverston.

Sue and Bob Cheetham have embarked on the venture after launching their creative cupcake business a year ago.

The couple’s intricately-iced cupcakes – which include Chocolate, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Kiwi and Passion Fruit flavours – proved a sweet success at local farmers markets and shows throughout the year as plans were afoot for the husband and wife team to open a tea room at their picturesque 16th Century farmhouse a mile from Broughton Beck.

“We had been thinking of doing something like this ever since we realised that we were on the walking route,” said Sue.

“I have always enjoyed baking, it’s something I’ve always done.

"There was such a good response when we started Windy Ash Cupcakes because we tried to make them a little bit different and really capture natural flavours – and the tearoom has developed from that.”

As well as delightful cupcakes, the cosy tearoom also offers light lunches - including roast ham ciabatta and salad with home-made blackberry vinaigrette and Plough-mans - and cream teas.

“We are starting off quite simply to see how it goes and find out what people want,” said Bob.

“All of our cakes, jams and chutneys are made here and we are also trying to use local producers where we can.

"Our bread is from More? Artisan Bakery, in Staveley, and we also use Kendal Cordials and Farrers Coffee.”

The tearoom is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 10.30am to 4pm, although some weeks may vary so customers are advised to check at www.windyashcupcakes.co.uk before going.
