THE principal of Barrow Sixth Form College which attracts students from Coniston, Cartmel, Grange and Ulverston has said the college has achieved another year of excellent results with one Furness student off to Cambridge.

The overall pass rate was 98% - one percent up from last year - and between the students they achieved 478 A*, A and B grades.

Vice principal Jan Fielding said: “Yet again the staff and students have worked exceptionally hard to achieve these outstanding results. Many of our very able students have excelled with many being awarded the new A* grade.”

Faye Mulholland, originally of Dowdales School, is expecting to go to study archaeology and anthropology at Jesus College, Cambridge after achieving top grades.

Other impressive results came from three former Dowdales School pupils who achieved four A grades, including one A*. Natalie Ingram, will now go on to study Law at Durham University, Emma Godefroy will study Law at Liverpool and Christie Fraser is going to Manchester University to study history.

The following students from the South Lakes area achieved three grades As at A level: Jonathan Clarke formerly of UVHS and Kathryn Thomason, Sophie Whiteway, Abigail Ingham, James Malloch and Peter Jesson, all of Dowdales.

Three students piloted the new Advanced Extended Project with great success, gaining two As and one B.

Ms Fielding said: “We intend to offer this course to all our most able first year students in September. It is viewed very positively by top universities. We also delighted by the results of our first cohort of Society Health and Development Advanced Diploma students who have performed very well and the majority will now continue in their chosen vocational field.”

She added that any students disappointed with their results will be supported by staff who will support them in adapting their future plans.
