SHEFFIELD band The Crookes are joining an impressive roster of stars swapping the bright lights for literature with a gig at Lancaster Library on Saturday (Oct 2).

The new-pop four piece who count can Radio 1 DJs Steve Lamacq and Huw Stevens, and legendary crooner Richard Hawley among their biggest fans, will play tracks from their hotly tipped EP Dreams of Another Day.

Fresh from a hectic world tour which saw them play alongside Muse at the SXSW festival in Texas, the band promise to wow book lovers not only with their bouncy romance drenched riffs but their razor sharp 60s wardrobe.

It will be a welcome return to the region for the band who played Kendal Calling festival at Lowther Deer Park in July.

Drummer Russell Bates said: “Having spent the last three years of our lives in the darker corners of Western Bank library at the University of Sheffield we were all very keen to reclaim the library as a place of intrigue and wonderment, somewhere to get lost and found with every step you take.”

The band are also asking fans to bring their favourite books to recommend or swap with other fans’ choices to make this the most literary of rock outings.

“It would be nice to get a bit of an exchange going among the audience. We use literary references a lot in our songs, like Lovers and Sons - a title which gives a little a nod to the D H Lawrence classic. Mainly though we are excited at the prospect of going to libraries where we do not owe obscene amounts of money in overdue notices!”

Supporting the band is Alan Pownall who released his debut album True Love Stories on Mercury Records in June this year after touring with Adele.

A husky voiced singer/song writer from north London, Pownall tells tales of unrequited love, pouring heartfelt honesty into every line.

Catch the Crookes and Alan Pownell at Lancaster Central Library, Market Square, on Saturday October 2 at 8pm. Tickets £6.50 available from www.getitloudinlibraries.com.
