A PROMINENT South Lakeland councillor is calling for a re-think over plans which could lead to hundreds of new homes in Heversham and Holme.

Roger Bingham said he feared a new land allocation strategy for the district could create intolerable pressures in both communities.

Coun Bingham, who represents Heversham as a county councillor and Holme as a district councillor, feared the proposal for Holme would expand the village so much it would end up larger than Milnthorpe.

“Holme has already doubled in size and population in the last 28 years,” said Coun Bingham.

“There just aren’t the shops and services there to justify much more growth.”

He said there were ‘considerable transport and highways issues’ with plans to build 99 homes at Heversham.

“This number of homes might not be considered disproportionate but as all the sites are within the village it would upset the balance of the community.

"They would create a false suburban impression from one of Heversham’s main views.

"You would see the church tower emerging from an array of roofs.”
