THE Lake District will this year host a major new mountain biking event that is set to challenge even the most experienced riders.

The planetFear sponsored Lakes Epic will take competitors on a mountainous course that covers 110km over two days - May 21 and 22 - and follows a route through the heart of the national park.

The planetFear Lakes Epic will be one of the main events during the 2011 Keswick Mountain Festival, which runs from May 18-22 Starting from the festival’s adventure base in Keswick, the Lakes Epic will cover 65km on day one, followed by an overnight stay in a tent, and then 45km on day two.

Riders will have to be physically and technically capable of riding some very challenging trails that include steep climbs, exposed single track, and rocky and technical descents.

Only 100 places are available, with an entry fee of £95 per person.

This includes transportation of kit, overnight tent accommodation, Saturday night dinner, Sunday breakfast and feed stations.

Lucy Bennett, director of Keswick Mountain Festival, said: “Not only is the Lake District one of the most stunning locations in the UK, it is also home to some outstanding mountain biking destinations.

"We’re really excited about the planetFear Lakes Epic – 100 of the best mountain bikers around, England’s highest mountains and a hugely challenging course on unforgiving terrain.

"This is undoubtedly going to be one of the biggest highlights of the Keswick Mountain Festival and will provide the perfect finale to our bike programme.”

The Lakes Epic is part of an extensive Bike programme at Keswick Mountain Festival.

Supported by Cycle Wise and Keswick Mountain Bikes, activities will include skills courses, guided rides and treasure hunts.

The hub of the festival will be the Adventure Base, situated next to the Theatre By The Lake in Keswick, where riders will be able to sign up for events, meet experts and find a wide range of products.

Visitors will also be able to watch the various sporting events from the Adventure Base.
