HUNDREDS of Young Farmers took part in a 200-mile charity bed push over three days.

Teams from the south and north of the county set off simultaneously from Broughton-in-Furness and Drigg on Thursday.

Their aim was to push the bed and visit all YFC clubs along the way and meet up at Penrith Show on Saturday afternoon. They were also raising funds for the Great North Air Ambulance.

As each club was reached their members took over the pushing of the bed.

Mark Hurst of Aspatria YFC organised the event along with Lauren Galbraith of Grayrigg YFC.

“The air ambulance is a great cause and extremely important to the rural community,” said Mark. “Young Farmers decided this year to concentrate their efforts on trying to raise as much money as possible for them”

The Young Farmers collected over £3,000 in their buckets as they pushed their beds through Cumbria’s towns and villages and have over £2,500 in sponsorship.

“I am extremely proud of our members,” said Jan Davinson, YFC County Organiser. “Four hundred young people turned out to support this effort, many of them having to take time off work.

“ I would like to thank Mark and Lauren for organising such an amazing event and County President Frank Gate and District President David Hurst for their support over the three days. The fund raising for charity that Young Farmers do often goes unrecognised but it is a core part of YFC.”

Over the year the Young Farmers have held a range of events as varied as calf rearing and the “Full Monty” in an effort to raise £15,000 for the Air Ambulance.
