COUNCILLORS took to the streets of Ulverston today to spray dog mess pink.

Coun Clare Feeney-Johnson led a team of staff at The Gill to highlight the blight of dog dirt on communities.

“We were a bit taken aback by the sheer quantity – it was there to see with every step you took,” she said.

“The whole idea of the process was to show people that this is a real issue – it isn’t just a one-off.

“I am hoping that we can show the minority of dog owners who do not act responsibly and clean up after their dogs, the affect on the community around them.”

Poop scoop bags and advice on how to keep the area free from dog dirt was also handed out.

Pink spray cans were donated by the Forestry Commission to help spray the mess.

Coun Feeney-Johnson said she would like to organise more dog dirt pick-up days throughout the district similar to litter collections, which she has organised in the past.

She added that members of the public said on the day that they felt spraying mess pink was a ‘quite effective’ method of showing the problem.

After the dog poo was sprayed, it was then cleared away.

The project was launched as part of National Poop Scoop Week.
