FORGET the eclectic acts on TV’s Britain’s Got Talent – today it was North Lonsdale Agricultural Show that attracted all the viewers.

Thousands flocked to the Furness coastline to see the best of the region’s livestock scrutinised by master judge Philip Halhead.

Mr Halhead said this year's high quality of entries symbolised a welcome renaissance in British farming.

“Agriculture in the current environment is picking up and you can see that when you look around here today,” he said.

“The public want more local food and a future for our farming, and here is where you can see the best of it – it’s the real setting for Britain’s Got Talent.”

Organisers of the show said the annual fixture, at Bardsea Park, near Ulverston, had seen a bumper number of visitors attracted by the spectacle and bright sunshine.

The event's greatest accolade for Supreme Champion Beast was won by pampered dairy cow Denmire Goldwin Reba. The three-year-old super milker gives 60 litres a day and also took the Champion Dairy gong.

Owner Andrew Dennison, from Denmire Holsteins, of nearby Scales Park Farm, said he was exceptionally proud.

“For us this is a shop window, and she has been treated like a supermodel to get her on top form,” he said.

Further up the field, past candyfloss stands, alpaca pens and a long queue for ice cream, Claire and Ian Shuttleworth, from Mountbarrow Farm, in Ulverston, pipped their peers to win the Champion Sheep Award.

Mr Shuttleworth, 45, said: “We’ve been up since six but the real work has taken place over the last few weeks, when we’ve dyed them and preened them to show off their features.”

For the first time, the show enlisted commentator Ray Hodgson to make judging accessible to intrigued onlookers.

“I’m especially pleased by youngsters entering the handling classes,” he said.

“These are the next generation of farmers and they are already showing they can hold their own.”
